The Area

Almeria Area
The province of Almeria offers a wide variety of things to see and do. Many of the villages around Mojacar hold weekly markets - these are always worth a visit. There are many inhabited cave villages, and there are prehistoric caves at Sorbas, as well as Roman and Moorish remains. Granada and the Alhambra are about a two hour drive away. Mini Hollywood (where films like 'Fistful of Dollars' were made) is an hours drive away. There are stunning views on the drive from Mojacar to Carboneras and onto the majestic coastline of Cabo de Gata with its hidden, secluded beaches and coves. Garrucha and Carboneras are both lively fishing ports selling freshly caught fish. A new waterpark can be found a 20 minute drive away. Nijar, about a 30 minute drive, is a great place to shop for local pottery and handicrafts.

Garrucha (2 miles)
A very pretty Spanish seafront town with beautiful beaches and a charming little harbour where local fisherman sell their catches to the local restaurants. Many different food tastes are available here (Spanish, Mexican, Indian and our favourite chinese restaurant!) and the evening seafront markets are charming.

Mojacar (4 miles)
This mountain-top town has to be visited to be enjoyed. It has two parts - Mojacar Playa at the foot of the mountain, with its miles of beaches, restaurants, bars, shops and golf course; and Mojacar Old Town, situated on the mountain. It has a rich Moorish history, evident from the architecture, mountain-top restaurants, spectacular panoramic views, walks, shops, markets and outdoor evening entertainment. Vera (2 miles)
This medium-sized town is typically Spanish; large supermarkets for everything you need: banks, shops, great markets with fantastic bargains. One of the beaches at Vera Playa is also a ‘nudie’ beach if you are feeling adventurous!
